Gamma Knife Treatment

Gamma Knife radiosurgery is a state-of-the-art neurosurgical sub-specialty that arrived in the United States about 15 years ago.The technology employs highly precise, focused beams of radiation to treat many brain disorders including benign tumors (see list below), malignant disease, certain neurovascular diseases and some types of pain and movement disorders.

Rocky Mountain Gamma Knife Center at St. Anthony Central Hospital became one ofthe earliest adopters of this technology in the U.S. when its first patient was treated in early May 1993.Since that time, over 2,300 patients have received radiosurgical treatments here, making us the Rocky Mountain Region’s most experienced Center of Excellence for gamma knife care.

The Center’s staff of eight board-certified neurosurgeons represents all of the major Front Range practices, including InterMountain Neurosurgery & Neuroscience, Western Neurological, the University of Colorado and the Colorado Neurological Institute. Seven Colorado board-certified radiation oncologists have practice privileges at the Center. The nursing and medical physics staff has been practicing continuously together at the Center since it opened. All told, Rocky Mountain Gamma Knife Center staff represents over 200 years of combined clinical experience in radiosurgery.

Over 400 patients have been treated on the Center’s new Gamma Knife C Unit. This unit, which employs a robotic automatic patient positioning system, sets the world’s highest standard for accuracy and precision in radiosurgery. Using this device along with the highly-sophisticated 5th-generation planning software the radiosurgery team achieves the most conformal and accurate treatments possible.

Over 40 different brain conditions have been successfully treated at the Center since 1993. Of these, the most commonly treated conditions were the following:
