Nation's First and Finest

It comes as a surprise to some that the nation's first, and still one of its finest, air transport programs never requests financial information prior to an emergency flight. This service is part of St. Anthony Hospitals, and now Centura Health's commitment. Generous contributions from a grateful public help significantly.

In every way, Flight For Life is a community resource:

We provide trauma transport across several states' highways and skyways with the region's most well-equipped vehicles. The Flight For Life Medical Team involves paramedic and pediatric specialists in emergency medicine.

Saving a Life

Flight For Life, operating out of Denver, Frisco, Pueblo and Colorado Springs, is part of the emergency transport services of Centura Health. Staffed with highly trained nurses, paramedics and respiratory therapists, Flight For Life is able to handle all patients in need of air medical transport, or ground transport by the Critical Care Ground Transport ambulance.

Since 1993, Flight For Life has been accredited by the International Commission for the Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems. We are proud that our emergency air and ambulance system was the first in Colorado to achieve this designation.

How It All Started

Founded by St. Anthony Hospitals in 1972, Flight For Life was the first civilian hospital-based emergency air ambulance in the United States. Since then, it has served as the model for more than 300 flight programs worldwide.

Flight For Life Denver

Since its inception in 1972, Flight For Life has been a community service to the people of Colorado and the surrounding region. Although operated by St. Anthony Hospitals, Flight For Life transports patients to any appropriate medical facility.

Available 24 hours a day, Flight For Life may be requested by any physician, ambulance service, fire department, law enforcement agency, or search and rescue group. A patient's ability to pay is never questioned when urgent transport is needed.

Flight For Life Denver, provides resuscitation, stabilization and transport for patients across the lifespan. The Newborn/Young Child Team and the Adult/Pediatric Team provide service via three methods of transport: helicopter, ground ambulance, and fixed-wing aircraft.

Where We Serve

Today, Flight For Life is based at four Centura Health facilities: St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver, St. Anthony Summit Medical Center in Frisco, St Mary-Corwin Medical Center in Pueblo and Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs. Although operated by Centura Health, approximately 42 percent of flights travel to hospitals other than Centura facilities. The needs of the patient come first, and Flight For Life will transport a patient to the nearest and most qualified facility.

The eight-state region served by Flight For Life includes more than 200 communities in Colorado, as well as western Kansas and Nebraska, Montana, New Mexico, South Dakota and Wyoming. In addition to the flagship helicopters, which fly within a 100-120 mile radius, the service includes fixed-wing aircraft capable of traveling 400 miles one way, and access to a Learjet for journeys beyond 500 miles.
